What is a FMS interface?
A FMS interface is an electronics device to read the data from a vehicle data network and translate the data into standard FMS (J1939) data. FMS interfaces have functions to:

• Act as a firewall, so the vehicle data network cannot be interfered
• Translate the proprietary vehicle signals into FMS standard
• Filter data, not all data is made available

About FMS standard
The FMS standard is set of data defined by the Truck manufacturers. The list of 20 items is not sufficient to support full fleet management functions, and not all vehicles support the same set of data. For cars there is no FMS interface specification. Also the OBD specification gives no good basis for fleet management purposes.

Output in FMS CANbus or RS232?
Squarell made interfaces with a FMS J1939 output or a RS232 output. The output for this solution is FMS J1939 CAN High CAN Low.

The FMS interfaces with RS232 output are identified as FMS interface with RS232.

Do you need a FMS interface?
To read the data from a vehicle you’ll need a FMS interface of some kind. You cannot read data from a vehicle data network without a protective interface function. Only a few manufacturers provide (beside the diagnostics connector) a data output for these purposes. With Squarell FMS interface you do not have to visit the dealer as the FMS interface is ready to go.
